Tripling the recipe would require 3 times 1 1/3 cups of sugar, or 4 cups:

3(4/3) = 4

So if Karen already has 1/2 cup of sugar on hand, she needs (4 - 1/2), or 3 1/2, more cups of sugar to triple the recipe.  (answer)
